Star Watch: a Christmas quilt featuring Hearthside Holiday from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! Last October I shared sneak peek photos of another winter quilt I was working on, a Christmas version of my Star Watch pattern featuring fabrics by Deb Strain (Moda). This festive quilt is now complete, and yesterday I took several photos to share with you.

My daughter was home this weekend and commented that she hoped this quilt was for her, as she really loved the striking black and red, the buffalo checks and plaids, and the deer head motif. The traditional holiday elements have a slightly contemporary feeling thanks to that color combination, we decided. Sadly ...

Bloom-Topia: A finished quilt top from Carried Away Quilting

Our Bloom-Topia charity quilt along journey began in January. Now it is July and we can look back at the fun we have had along the way. It feels wonderful to have participated in this effort! Many thanks to Fat Quarter Shop for hosting this annual event, which will benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation of central and south Texas. To date we have raised over $55,000, with Fat Quarter Shop and Moda Fabrics each matching up to $10,000. Here is my completed Bloom-Topia top:

As you know, I stitched my own version of Bloom-Topia using mostly prints from the ...

Barn Style quilt . . . just because from Carried Away Quilting

Sometimes I have to make a quilt just because my heart tells me so. I bet that’s true for a lot of you as well. It doesn’t matter if I’m too busy or have other sewing projects that should be a priority, that desire to sew up a particular pattern with treasured fabrics is too strong to ignore.  And that’s how it was for me recently, when I stitched up the Barn Style pattern by Lella Boutique using some of my favorite fabrics.

I love everything about this quilt. The bold, over-sized blocks create a simple ...

Bloom Topia: Release 10 (the final block) from Carried Away Quilting

I cannot believe that we are nearing the end of the Bloom-Topia quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop. Today I'm sharing the final block (Release 10) which is the large Richmond Block. The next time I post about my progress, I'll have all of my blocks sewn together and the borders attached! So be sure to check back with me on July 1.

The Richmond Block finishes at 18 1/2" square and is so easy to stitch together. For my center square, I used the navy text print from Sweetwater's Sweet Tea collection. Don't you ...

Bloom-Topia: Release 9 from Carried Away Quilting

Happy first day of June! I hope you all are well, safe and happily quilting! I'm excited to share my latest Bloop-Topia blocks with you today.  These are my Release 9 blocks, titled Evening Star and Dragonfly, and I just love how they turned out. Have you been quilting along? I sure have enjoyed this slow-paced quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop.

The Dragonfly blocks were made using a tool called the Starburst 30 Degree Triangle Ruler by Creative Grids. I love it when a pattern pushes me to try a new technique or tool. The Bloom-Topia pattern provides ...

Bloom-Topia: Release 8 from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! I can't believe it's already the middle of May and there are only a few blocks remaining in our Bloom-Topia Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop. What fun this has been! Today I'm sharing my Release 8 block, which is called Corn and Beans.

This was a super easy block with nicely sized pieces. I took a risk and decided to use a navy print for my background fabric, which I think makes this simple block look more striking. From a distance, that navy background fabric almost takes on a denim tone, which I ...

Bloom-Topia: Release 7 from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! I'm cruising right along with my Bloom-Topia blocks. Today I'm sharing my Release 7 blocks for this fun charity quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop.

Our assignment was to make two long Geese blocks, each measuring 6 1/2" x 18 1/2".  One of the Geese blocks was then used as the middle portion of the larger block, the Geese and Gander block, which finished at 18 1/2" x 30 1/2".

I introduced a bit of Sweet Tea fabric (by Sweetwater) into these blocks.  The navy with white pin dot is from ...

Bloomington bundle giveaway with LouLou's Fabric Shop from Carried Away Quilting

Last weekend I had a play date with myself in my sewing room. I pulled out my stash of Lella Boutique fabrics and admired some of my favorite prints. I rifled through my pattern basket for project ideas. I didn’t have a plan, but I felt compelled to create. For me that is the true joy of sewing. Turning myself over to the process, letting the outside world fall away, becoming happily focused on something basic and beautiful.

So today I'm sharing a little peek at what I was up to. Mostly I just cut some fabric and ...

Bloom-Topia: Release 6 from Carried Away Quilting

I'm popping in today to share my Release 6 block for the 2020 Bloom-Topia quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop.  This pretty block is called the Lewis & Clark block, and it finishes at 24" square.

The center square of this block is 4" finished (4 1/2" cut), which is a great size for fussy cutting or using a focal fabric.  I selected a lovely navy floral for the center square. I also switched things up a bit on my block, electing to border it with a taupe print rather than a neutral border as called for in the ...

Bloom-Topia: Release 5 from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends. I'm back today sharing three more blocks for the 2020 Bloom-Topia quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop.  These beautiful Release 5 blocks were so much fun to make.

The Martha Washington Star Block features a festive pinwheel nestled in a traditional star. The pattern called for the background fabric behind the pinwheel to be neutral, but I substituted that for a soft green, which I think warms up the overall look of the block.

We also made Magnolia Bud blocks this month. Once again I broke the rules. Instead of using a neutral fabric for the ...

Bloom-Topia: Release 4 from Carried Away Quilting

Welcome back! Today I'm sharing my latest blocks for the 2020 Bloom-Topia quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop.  The Release 4 blocks are so striking, aren't they? The blocks are named Sarah's Choice and Goose & Gosling

The Sarah's Choice (star) blocks were a little tricky, but I pinned, pressed and stitched carefully. Pinning is essential for me to keep my seams matched up!  I also use my walking foot when sewing together blocks with a lot of seam bulk. The walking foot makes it much easier to maneuver over bulky junctions!

My version of Bloom-Topia features ...

Flying Geese quilt ladder runner from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! I'm excited to update you on a project I started last year, a long Flying Geese runner featuring one of my favorite fabric collections, Harvest Road by Lella Boutique for Moda. The runner is finished, and I've displayed it on a quilt ladder in my living room. I'm really happy with how it turned out!

The inspiration for this project came from the Furrows block and Harvest tablerunner in Lori Holt’s Farm Girl Vintage book. My runner is much longer than the sample in the book, finishing at 96" long by 12" wide ...

Throw quilt featuring Harvest Road's "Nature" panel from Carried Away Quilting

Most of you know how crazy I am about the Harvest Road fabric collection by Lella Boutique. Did you also know that Moda produced a quilt panel with this collection? It is aptly named “Nature” and features oversized sketches of the Harvest Road oak leaves and florals in white against a beautiful sage green backdrop.

The Nature panel measures at 57” x 69” and makes a wonderful throw quilt. I purchased my favorite navy floral from the Harvest Road collection to use for the backing. Isn’t it gorgeous?

I sent the top and backing off to Starlit Quilts for ...

Bloom-Topia: Release 3 from Carried Away Quilting

I'm cruising right along with my blocks for the 2020 Bloom-Topia quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop.  The Release 3 blocks were super easy: two Duckling blocks (one with sashing and one without) and two Matchstick blocks.

The pattern calls for fun, multicolored Matchstick blocks, but I made mine a bit more subdued. I sure hope my color and print placement all works out in the end. It looks pretty in my mind, but I won't know until all the blocks are completed and laid out on my living room floor. While it makes me a little nervous ...

Bloom-Topia: Release 2 from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! I'm popping in today with my Release 2 block for the 2020 Bloom-Topia quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop.  Isn't she a dandy? This block is called Carolina Lily. It finishes at 18 1/2" x 20 1/2" and is a snap to make.

If you read my last post, you'll know that I am honored to be one of the guest bloggers for this charity quilt along which benefits Make-A-Wish. The sweet folks at Fat Quarter Shop were kind enough to send the original Bloom-Topia quilt out on a road trip, visiting ...

Bloom-Topia: Release 1 from Carried Away Quilting

Today I'm revealing my first blocks for the 2020 charity quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop, called Bloom-Topia. I'm thrilled to be one of the guest bloggers for this program which benefits Make-A-Wish of Central & South Texas. I'll be sharing my blocks with you twice a month. Will you join me in sewing along?

Both of the blocks in Release 1 finish at 12 1/2" square and are easy to construct. Remember, the block patterns are free, and they will be released by Fat Quarter Shop twice a month.  We quilters are simply asked to make ...

Cross stitch: getting started with a mug rug from Carried Away Quilting

Thank you all for your kind, funny and enthusiastic comments about our fish house. We continue to enjoy our time on the frozen lake, particularly when the neighbors wander over to visit and share their snacks. It’s like a block party on the ice.

Since my blog post, Stitching while Ice Fishing, I’ve taken baby steps back into cross stitching.  I have to tell you, I felt like a newbie, all awkward and unsure of what I was doing. After some minor struggles, I stitched a small practice piece which I made into a mug rug.

The Jack ...

Flying Geese blocks featuring the Harvest Road collection from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! I hope you all had a joyous holiday and are excited about the coming New Year. I’ve been thankful for a quiet December. Besides enjoying time with family, I worked on my 2020 calendar, read, wrote project lists and goals, and watched some favorite old movies. I also did a bit of sewing, which I’m sharing with you today.

I’m making a looooong runner of Flying Geese blocks that I intend to hang in my living room. I only have two of the eight 12” blocks completed, but the construction is easy peasy. I ...
